    Overview
This wiki is devoted to Paolo Bacigalupi's 2009 Nebula Award-winning science-fiction novel The Windup Girl. Teams of 4 to 5 classmates have created wiki projects that both provide background information about and interpret the themes of the book. The goal of the project was to research the cultural contexts of the novel and to show how they inform the plot, characters, setting, themes, symbolism, or other literary techniques.

of the book. Though your wiki does not have to argue a single thesis, it should offer connected claims and supporting evidence about the significance and effectiveness of the novel. In other words, any information provided on the background or context should be linked back to the role it plays in the book, supported by some close reading of selected text.
Teams will be composed of 4-5 students (to be formed on D2L/Discussion forum “Wiki Team Enrollment”: either self-selected by April 25 or assigned to a team by instructor on April 26).

The project must include a minimum of 5-7 pages (about 1500-2000 words) of original text, combining research and interpretation of the novel. TheProjects:
    Here are
links between research and your team’s analysis of the novel must be scrupulously documented (MLA or APA, pick one style for the whole wiki). Any images, text, or other materials used on the wiki must adhere to copyright restrictions (documented fair use). Your wiki must include references to 6 reliable secondary sources (Internet or database or print).
The site should follow principles of good web/wiki design (see links at D2L and Wikispaces) and make use of
the various potentials of wikis, such as:
organization of the project’s text into logical subdivisions,
    effective visual design,
    comment spaces for feedback,
    appropriate multimedia content,
    deep linking (to quality sources),
    evidence of team revision.
    As
projects that last bullet indicates, the team should take advantage of the collaborative potential of a wiki to help one another out with design, content, writing, editing, and proofreading. I will expect the project to meet high standards in terms of both content and style (polish!).
    Due Dates:
    Rough draft should be done
were developed by Monday, May 6. The final version should be finished by Friday, May 10. By our final exam time, you should read and respond to the other team’s wikistudents.

    Some Contexts
    that you’ll be assigned.
    Possible Organizational Schemes:
Think about how you want to organize your informative and interpretive wiki. Should it be organized by themes? Should it be focused on different characters? Should it be centered around the novel’s connections to real world contexts? Should it be organized according to the different questions that the team members have about the book? There are many possibilities.
    {siam_parisexposition_bw.jpg} Some Contexts
    were Suggested for Research:
biotechnology: genetic modification (GMOs), cloning/stem cell research
environmentalism and/vs. economics: agribusiness, invasive species and biological diversity, climate change, the disappearance of non-renewable resources
    ...
literature/science fiction: trope of artificial life (another heir of Frankenstein), “steampunk” technology, “biopunk” science fiction, ecocriticism, Bacigalupi (author biography, interviews, reviews of The Windup Girl, and other works such as the two “Windup Stories”: “The Calorie Man” and “The Yellow Card Man”)
labor history: factory labor and human rights, labor issues in the developing world
These are just some possibilities. You can come up with others.{TeaAutomatAndMechanism.jpg} Photo Credit: Wikimedia (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TeaAutomatAndMechanism.jpg), Public Domain
